Signs and Symptoms of Agoraphobia: What to Look For

​Recognizing agoraphobia in yourself or a loved one can be the first step toward getting help. Here are the common signs and symptoms to watch for.
Physical symptoms
  • Rapid heartbeat
  • Difficulty breathing
  • Chest tightness or pain
  • Sweating
  • Dizziness or lightheadedness
  • Nausea
Behavioral signs
  • Avoiding places or situations (stores, crowds, public transportation)
  • Needing a companion to go places
  • Staying home most or all of the time
  • Inability to engage in normal activities
  • Extreme anxiety about being in places where escape might be difficult
Emotional symptoms
  • Intense fear of losing control
  • Fear of being trapped
  • Feeling helpless or embarrassed
  • Anxiety about being alone
How it limits life
When agoraphobia goes untreated, it can completely take over someone's life. They may be unable to work, attend family events, shop for groceries, or live independently.
